Hooves on the move

Once I had the chance to go on a little walk near Coonoor Hills where there were pavements to stroll along. A valley so big with silent hills in view and giant trees breeze their existence, as I was just walking with heads up looking for birds and unexpectedly stumbled upon on something strange near my foot which my brain wasn’t braining at first. It wasn’t bandicoot rat this big and not a deer this small for sure. A mouse deer?!! Suddenly it flashed into my head, I almost stepped on him. Not realizing I was too close for comfort as I froze with surprise seeing this nocturnal species out in the wild during the daytime with no fear.

Knowing how shy the species could be, I made sure not to move any further and he kept an eye on me before resuming his morning breakfast of flowers on the ground.

For almost thirty minutes, he walked around slowy eating the vegetation with his little vampire fangs. His eyes sort of glowing like cat eyes and unusual patterns captivated me as I sat down absorbing every detail. Suddenly he turned straing at me as if I jumped from the sky for a minute before running into the wilderness. I still don't understand why he didn't have fear that long.

Indian Spotted Chevrotain, also known as the Indian Mouse Deer. These small, shy mammals belong to the Tragulidae family and are found in forests and grasslands across India. They are nocturnal and primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, and flowers. Indian Spotted Chevrotains are known for their small size, delicate build, and distinctive spotted coat.
